I have spent all my adult life in the sales field, from my humble beginnings as a landscaper, paperboy and greeting card salesman in my youth, to my first real job in outside sales.

Each of these ventures brought its own challenges and lessons. As a landscaper, I not only had to knock on the doors and make the sale, I also had to do hours of back-breaking work in the Arizona sun. As a paperboy, I had to deliver the product 365 days a year, collect the money, and get up before dawn, all for a very small percentage of the profits.

The real test of my mettle came when I got my first real sales job. My boss gave me the dreaded “Territory 7”, drawing gasps from my co-workers. Territory 7 was long known as the black hole of the area and no one had seen any real success there.

I couldn't believe my boss had given me Territory 7. We had just finished two weeks of sales training and I was clearly the star of the class. Why would she punish me with Territory 7?

That feeling of confidence in me was contagious and I chose to make Territory 7 produce like never before.

But plan or no plan, I was still scared to death. I still remember the fear I felt, sitting in my car procrastinating and sweating out the first of the “No’s” before I decided action was the answer.

My feet still hurt when I think about how many miles I walked to land those first sales deals.

After working for several days without any sales, I landed that first elusive ‘yes’, an add-on to an existing account. It was a good start, but I wanted to feel the rush of cultivating a new client of my own.

Dozens of cold calls and rejections later, I finally landed a hair salon as a new client. I assessed the client’s needs, showed them how my product would fill that need and Presto!, one sale.

Even though I've had thousands of sales in my career, I still remember the excitement I felt after I closed that first sale.

While one sale was great, one sale does not equal sales hero. So I kept at it, talking to prospects, working my plan and refusing to let my enthusiasm falter even on days when it felt like I'd never hear "yes" again.

19th Century Italian Economist Vilfredo Pareto (1848-1923) made the observation that 80 percent of the productivity in an enterprise came from efforts of 20 percent of the workers.

I have seen this “law” proven time and time again in the world of sales. It stunned me to discover 20 percent of the sales force in a given company is generating 80 percent of the sales and therefore the commissions.

And, unfortunately, 80% of the sales people will struggle or fail.

My experience showed me that the 80 percent of the sales people with little or no success had several common complaints.

All this defeatist grousing can be attributed to a single root problem – the lack of a coherent plan to maximize sales, regardless of the other factors.
